Google Consent Mode v2 cookie banner: what Google asks
A Google Consent Mode v2 cookie banner does two jobs for Google's tags. Google says to set a default value for each consent type you use, because by default no consent mode values are set, and then to update the consent state when the visitor uses your consent settings.
Consent mode was updated in November 2023 with two added parameters: ad_user_data, which sets consent for sending user data related to advertising to Google, and ad_personalization, which sets consent for personalized advertising.
Google says the consent state can come from your own banner or from a consent management platform (CMP), the tool that shows the banner and records the choice. This page is informational and is not legal advice. CookieYes is a technology platform that assists with compliance, each site owner stays responsible, and a qualified lawyer answers your own case. Try CookieYes →Basic or Advanced consent mode
Basic mode holds Google tags back until the visitor acts on the banner. Advanced mode lets them load on arrival with default states. CookieYes says Advanced then uses cookieless pings and collects only essential data for behavioral and conversion modeling.
| Mode | Google tags | CookieYes switch |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Load only after the visitor acts on the banner | Support GCM, on by default |
| Advanced | Fire on arrival with default states | Allow Google tags to fire before consent |
Pick Basic when no Google tag should load before a choice. Whether a banner is needed at all is covered in do I need a cookie banner for Google Analytics.
Default settings scoped to where the banner shows
Google calls it best practice to scope default consent settings to the regions where your banner is shown, so the defaults and the banner cover the same visitors. Google also says consent updates must be tracked on the page where they occur, before any page transition.
Adding Consent Mode v2 with a CookieYes banner
- Open the CookieYes dashboard, then Advanced Settings, and find the Google Consent Mode setting.
- Leave Basic on, or switch on the Advanced toggle.
- Connect through the Google Tag Manager template, using your CookieYes website key and the Consent Initialization trigger on All Pages, or load the scripts in the order CookieYes lists for your mode.
- Click Check Now beside Check GCM status.
Two limits from CookieYes's article: the tag manager method is incompatible with its WordPress plugin, covered in CookieYes plugin, and existing CookieYes users must take the CookieYes script out of the head tag first so it does not run twice.
Which banner tools carry it
